Adrenal Glands
Adrenal glands are present right next to the kidneys. This organ is made up of two different types of tissues. Glandular tissues form the cortex or outer portion while the medulla or inner portion originates from nerve tissues. Each layer has a distinct function to perform. The cortex portion secretes the sex hormones (estrogens and androgens) and hormones that regulate salt and sugar concentration in blood i.e., aldosterone and cortisol respectively. The medulla is under neurologic control and releases adrenaline in response to the “fight or flight” condition. Excess or deficiency of these hormones results in adrenal gland abnormality, which can be treated by hormone replacement therapy. In case of excess levels of hormones, it is treated medically which may require the removal of the gland to restore the normal hormone levels.
