Constipation

Constipation is the abnormal accumulation of the feces in the colon and is more common in cats as compared to dogs. Causes of constipation include:

• Dehydration
• Anal sac disease
• Obstruction caused by foreign body trapped in the colon
• Obstruction within the pelvic canal
• Idiopathic causes

Cats with constipation struggle while defecating, pass stool less often, vomit, and experience abdominal pain. Diagnosis is made based on clinical signs and medical history.  Treatment includes rehydration, dietary changes, stool softeners, and manual extraction of feces in case of severe constipation.
