Constipation
Constipation is the abnormal accumulation of the feces in the colon and is more common in cats as compared to dogs. Causes of constipation include:
- Dehydration
- Anal sac disease
- Obstruction caused by foreign body trapped in the colon
- Obstruction within the pelvic canal
- Idiopathic causes
Cats with constipation struggle while defecating, pass stool less often, vomit, and experience abdominal pain. Diagnosis is made based on clinical signs and medical history. Β Treatment includes rehydration, dietary changes, stool softeners, and manual extraction of feces in case of severe constipation.
