Colon

The large intestine is 10-20% of the small intestine in length but has a larger diameter, hence named large intestine. It has the following major functions:

  • water absorption
  • electrolyte absorption
  • fecal storage until discharge
  • fermentation of the ingested food fiber by useful bacteria

 

Inflammation of the large intestine results in colitis which can occur due to sudden dietary changes and parasites.  Dogs with colitis experience symptoms like inflammation in the lower region, pain while defecating, and feces with flecks of blood.
