Papillon

The Papillon is called Continental Toy Spaniel; the ancient toy spaniel gets its name from the feature butterfly-like look of the fringed and long hair on the ears.

History

The Papillon came from France, where it had been named for its unique ears. Papillon implies butterfly in French. Although not all have erect ears: The drop-eared type is called the phalene. The breed was referred to as a dwarf spaniel and their origin may go back to the 13th century.

Physical Appearance

The Papillon is part of the toy group. A small, fine-boned breed with a style that belies its frolicsome characteristics.
